What is NDIS support coordination?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a federal government scheme that represents a new way of delivering disability support to Australians. It’s a great scheme but it can be difficult and complex to navigate for participants.

Because it can be tricky to navigate the NDIS by yourself, the NDIS offers support coordination. The federal government defines this as “a capacity building support to implement all supports in a participant’s plan, including informal, mainstream, community and funded supports.”

This means that help is available to assist in navigating the NDIS so that you or someone close to you can get maximum value from the scheme and receive the disability support you need and deserve.

What is the role of a Support Coordinator?

The role of a Support Coordinator is to support you to understand and implement the funded supports in your NDIS plan and keep you connected with community, mainstream and other government services.

More specifically, your Support Coordinator will help you to negotiate with disability service providers about what they can offer you and how much it will cost out of your NDIS plan. They will also make sure that service agreements and service bookings are completed in an effort to help build your ability to exercise choice and control over your plan.

In essence, a Support Coordinator will assist you to optimise your plan to make sure that you are getting the most out of your federal government funded supports.

Who can get support coordination funding?

It’s the case that not all NDIS participants are provided with funding for support coordination. However, every NDIS participant has the right to submit a request for it. It is advisable that NDIS participants who want to add support coordination to their plan,  bring this up at their  NDIS planning meetings. The NDIS evaluates each participant on a case-by-case basis. 

Where do I get a Support Coordinator from?

You can look up registered support coordination providers using the Provider Finder tool in the NDIS participant portal myplace. The Provider Finder will enable you to locate support coordination providers that are situated near you. The NDIA publishes a list of registered providers in your state on the NDIS website every three months.
