More than self expression, art therapy engages attention, provides pleasure, improves neuropsychiatric symptoms, social behaviour, and self-esteem. Available as part of your NDIS or home care package, our art therapists work with seniors, carers, people living with dementia, and people with disabilities.
At Focus Care, we believe that irrespective of age or perceived ability, people should have the chance to engage in creative passions that can support physical, mental and psychological wellbeing.
What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy blends psychology and creativity, essentially creating art as a means for individuals to express themselves visually rather than through verbal or written communication.
It’s a branch of psychological therapy that uses the creative process to improve a person’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing to encourage self-expression without words.
Art therapy is for everyone, and is increasingly being used to help older Australians and people with a range of disabilities connect and communicate their inner and outer feelings and experiences.
What Are The Positive Benefits of Art Therapy?
Lead researchers in the field of creativity, disability support, aged care and dementia readily acknowledge the benefit of creative enterprise in the mental, social and physical wellbeing of older people.
At a forum held at the University of Wisconsin titled “Creative Expression and Dementia Care” a number of potential positive outcomes of art therapy undertaken by older people were listed, including:
Positive emotional responses
Reduction in agitation
Greater social engagement/interaction
Change in cognitive processes
Increased verbal fluency
Improved fine motor skills and physical coordination
Greater physical strength and balance
Improved mood and attention span
Less stress (caregivers and receivers alike)
Elevated quality of life
Greater understanding of the human condition.
